I'm can't believe I'm growing more cautious / bearish for whatever reason...my account just hit an all time high today on the back of a nice up day in NLS and COOL, yet I just get a feeling that things are amiss. I look around and see way too much froth in high fliers, valuations that are just ridiculous, CDS spreads getting blown out across the board in Europe, soft econ data in Europe (retail sales were down I think 1.0% across all of Europe), tightening in China, and state government shutdowns in the US yet the equity markets and my balances continue to grow. Granted there are some good things, like great corporate earnings, lower oil, high levels of cash on some of the tech companies, yet something smells fishy here. I suspect I will be going to cash to sit this out and possibly play a few things from the short side just for a tester.

Here is another performance portfolio that pre-dates the other, probably 98-99. Stocks were taken from a newsletter "The Chartist" which I used to read in the public library in St. Louis County, MO. In both of these ports there may be inaccuracies due to having missed a split, stock dividend, etc. If there was a split(s) it is accounted for by showing the number of shares as 2,3, or even 4 in the case of yahoo and the market value goes up accordingly, up from the 1 original share .

Little bit of good news an jobs and see the futures jump.
Still believe we get some any good job news this year and we end up +20%.
Buffett Interview on CNBC this morning. Pretty positive that things will work out for the better, but never talked about stock valuations - would have liked to heard something on this.
Here's the message I saw on my brokers page while logging in:
"Stocks are directionless today with the NYSE Advance/Decline ratio nearly even. The benchmark 10-year Treasury Bond is up today, driving its yield down to 3.16%."
BC - It's funny, yesterday he said governments like the US can't do much to turn things around while today he says something a bit different about intervention creating an impact.
I think they could accomplish something if their priorities were in line with the public's best interest.
Wow what a market. 2nd > Thank you for talking me off the bear stoop. However, I took this ramp higher this morning to make a bit of a portfolio adjustment. I sold 1/3 of my COOL position at $3.48....contemplating taking a large buy and hold position in DECK. I've been looking at this company for a while and the financials are just awesome. The growth is insane yet they're trading at a 30% discount to CROX which I consider to be a far less stable company. In the past 5 years they have quintupled earnings.
jeez someone keeps dumping big stock in OIH today. if it can keep withstanding these drops and if it can power back above $156 I think OIH is a great buy
I'm back to 67% cash and feeling kind of good about it with the major indices in oversold territory and my algo saying the gain/risk is poor in all three time frames for new positions.
"Big in the Bakken" Written by Paul Bunyan, illustrated by James MacGillivray and Jonathan Swift, including special vocals by Lemuel Gulliver and the Lilliputians. ;)
If we get a housing rebound, what would be the most positively impacted non homebuilder? I'm thinking companies like LPX, USG, etc...would love to see your guys list.
out of my COOL position at $3.35 to $3.38. Now I just have some NLS and am going to look for housing related companies that will benefit from a housing recovery / jobs recovery in the US, given Uncle Warren's comments on CNBC this morning.
2nd > Buffett basically just said that things continue to improve across all of their businesses and that he thinks housing will rebound stronger than people expect possibly by the end of this year.
(a) Stealth. Low volume. Plenty of cash left to chase. Speaking of which: (b) 'Overbought.' A load of crap, really. Overbought on low volume just means a ton of chasers left back at the station. (c) Net outflows from funds every week for the past several.
Add it all up, and you have J6P stuck holding cash again while the market climbs.
That's awesome, Kyle. The power of the internet is just amazing. Here we are, several guys scattered across the country, and we're able to talk with each other and link to sound bites in real time.
MITK is such a beast of a stock...it's making it hard for me to outrun it. I am currently about 1% above the return I would have had if I held on to my MITK shares....it just keeps going up day after day. I suspect I'm going to my chance to beat the return in the stock enough so that I can have some extra cash for any dip. Initially I was thinking it would top out at the $7 to $8 range until next quarter's earnings and possibly dip a little on fear of a miss, giving me the chance to enter at a discount....not sure that will happen but there is still another month to go til earnings.
What new high? Recent?

Buffett Interview on CNBC this morning. Pretty positive that things will work out for the better, but never talked about stock valuations - would have liked to heard something on this.
Quote of the Day from BC:
ReplyDelete"Buy and hold? I don't think so."
We should see 'good news' on non-farm payrolls tomorrow. That would be enough to guarantee YTD highs.
ReplyDeleteHere's the message I saw on my brokers page while logging in:
ReplyDelete"Stocks are directionless today with the NYSE Advance/Decline ratio nearly even. The benchmark 10-year Treasury Bond is up today, driving its yield down to 3.16%."
Jobs - I wouldn't be surprised to see some improvement, taking the index' higher. Europe might still be a big drag, or just bear fodder?
ReplyDeleteGMO - I'll be impressed if some day it can recapture $4.50 and hold it.
ReplyDeleteBC - It's funny, yesterday he said governments like the US can't do much to turn things around while today he says something a bit different about intervention creating an impact.
ReplyDeleteI think they could accomplish something if their priorities were in line with the public's best interest.
Not much for me to do here. Thought about a little short trade, but decided not to.
ReplyDeleteWow what a market.
ReplyDelete"Oil rises to above $98 after U.S. crude supply drop"
ReplyDeleteGood thing they borrowed from the future by opening the strategic supply reserve!
Grabbed some OIH on the dip down to $155 just now. Small position but it sure looks like it's ready to go higher.
ReplyDeleteSTEC kinda looks interesting.
ReplyDeleteOIH looks great if it can break $156...might grab a few calls if it does.
ReplyDeleteMark > good call yeah STEC does look good.
ReplyDeletejeez someone keeps dumping big stock in OIH today. if it can keep withstanding these drops and if it can power back above $156 I think OIH is a great buy
ReplyDeleteOIH- That was on the inventory report.
ReplyDeleteFCX- Man, what a grind higher.
ReplyDeleteWTF weren't we buying FCX around 47? How's in charge of that one?!
ReplyDeletere-established original COOL position at $3.46. Gonna give this some time to play itself out.
ReplyDeleteToo bad I'm nearly 50% in cash...
ReplyDeleteMark > weird how the /CL would ramp higher and OIH would ramp lower. Is that normal?
ReplyDeleteFCX - Didn't someone mention the octabottom once or twice?
ReplyDeleteAdded to OIH at $154.
ReplyDelete$USD - 59.97 double top target remains valid, FWIW.
ReplyDeleteMade 2 trades to capture profits:
ReplyDeleteCEF @ $21.24 vs paid $20.60 2 weeks ago,
MITK @ $7.78 vs paid $ 6.17 a month ago. Still holding MITK which was bot at $6.02. Stock is strong last couple days but volatile.
$USD - Shorter term 77.10 target - If 73.89 is breached to the downside, the ABC 77.10 upside target is invalidated.
ReplyDeleteCharts are plagued with upside gaps, they're almost everywhere I look...
ReplyDeleteI get it now, it's ignore the gap month. Need to write a song about it...
ReplyDeleteDon't see much in STEC or FCX unless they close above that top rail shown on FinViz. Not seeing anything that's good for me to buy. Maybe KCLI.
ReplyDeleteOIH coming back again...let's see if she can close above $156...if so I might pick up a couple of options.
ReplyDeleteHow about a song about BEXP with the often repeated hook lyric " Big in the Bakken"? It's kind of catchy.
ReplyDeleteI'm back to 67% cash and feeling kind of good about it with the major indices in oversold territory and my algo saying the gain/risk is poor in all three time frames for new positions.
ReplyDeleteOversold not, overbought yes.
ReplyDeletequick drop in COOL got bought right back up. Should have waited for this before going back to full position....oh well. They're shaking the tree.
ReplyDeleteteamonfuego,
ReplyDeletewanted to ask again in case you missed my question before.
Tried to find pricing on CDS spreads, but haven't had much luck - where do you get these?
Thanks
"Big in the Bakken" Written by Paul Bunyan, illustrated by James MacGillivray and Jonathan Swift, including special vocals by Lemuel Gulliver and the Lilliputians. ;)
ReplyDeleteKeeps on climbing! Holy ox carts, bat dung!
ReplyDeleteSomebody stated that markets tend to be sleepy in summer. Anything but sleepy today.... Bulls have the ball.
ReplyDeleteHey BB > I used to get it from markit.com I think but now I just google CDS Sovereign Spreads and check the news.
ReplyDeleteFST - Forest Oil down big today on earnings/outlook/downgrades. Natty producer.
ReplyDeleteLong 10 x OIH July $155 calls at $2.7
ReplyDeleteIf we get a housing rebound, what would be the most positively impacted non homebuilder? I'm thinking companies like LPX, USG, etc...would love to see your guys list.
ReplyDeleteMGIC/AXAS :(
ReplyDeleteout of my COOL position at $3.35 to $3.38. Now I just have some NLS and am going to look for housing related companies that will benefit from a housing recovery / jobs recovery in the US, given Uncle Warren's comments on CNBC this morning.
ReplyDeleteTOF- WY.
ReplyDeleteSSD
ReplyDeleteTF - Check out the following article on home builders mentions a few names:

WOSYY
ReplyDeleteWhat were Uncle Warren's comments this morning?
ReplyDeletethanks guys? do you guys follow any smaller cap companies that would stand to benefit?
ReplyDelete2nd > Buffett basically just said that things continue to improve across all of their businesses and that he thinks housing will rebound stronger than people expect possibly by the end of this year.
ReplyDeleteI like this rally. Three related reasons why:
ReplyDelete(a) Stealth. Low volume. Plenty of cash left to chase. Speaking of which:
(b) 'Overbought.' A load of crap, really. Overbought on low volume just means a ton of chasers left back at the station.
(c) Net outflows from funds every week for the past several.
Add it all up, and you have J6P stuck holding cash again while the market climbs.

ReplyDeleteThat's awesome, Kyle. The power of the internet is just amazing. Here we are, several guys scattered across the country, and we're able to talk with each other and link to sound bites in real time.
ReplyDeleteI like STEC right here. 2000 @ 18.02.
ReplyDelete2nd - It truly is incredible how much information there is on-line and how quickly new info is up-loaded...
ReplyDeleteI just exited a short MCP trade WAY, WAY Too Early...DAMN...:-(...Look at that SOB nose-dive...
SLW- Strange.
ReplyDeleteJeez look at these numbers for DECK:
ReplyDeleteSales:
06: $304 Mn
07: $449 Mn
08: $689 Mn
09: $813 Mn
10: $1.0 Mn
EPS:
06: $0.82
07: $1.69
08: $1.87
09: $2.96
10: $4.03
MOTR.
ReplyDeleteMark - what is strange about SLW? Still looking for a good entry point. Hoping for another selloff in metals.
ReplyDeleteMITK is such a beast of a stock...it's making it hard for me to outrun it.
