Took the youngest (I've started calling him 'the big guy') out mid-morning for errands and lunch, and missed most of the market action. Surprisingly, I didn't

You know, I think the indexes are headed down for awhile. That's really the only comment I have today.
dudes i was wondering if u could offer a tip. in the place i rent we have a garage with a remote controlled door on a track. it keeps getting stuck on the track about 1/4 of the way down then stops and comes back upp. the lights flick on and off a few times then it stops. any idea what i can do?
ReplyDeleteAssuming it sticks and binds in the same spot repeatedly, you may need to lube the tracks with garage door grease from HD, and possibly adjust the track slightly if binding is severe. The electric opener will also have a mechanical or motor current sensitivity adjustment depending on model, designed to reverse the door up if a child is trapped under the door.
DeleteAlso check the sensors at each end of the door at the floor to make sure the light beam isn't obstructed. They may be misaligned but this adjustment isn't usually critical, I find on mine that sometimes something is blocking the light beam.
Sounds kinda like you live in a dump though, I was once a slumlord....
DeleteCheck the tracks and make sure nothing is in them. Also, check the safety sensors and make sure nothing is between them. Odds are it is hitting something and the safety feature is pushing it back up - you can usually find what it is. Could even be a bend in the track that you can just straighten out with pliers.
ReplyDeleteBB is right. There may be something that catches the sensors' attention. We've had instances where someone accidentally knocks one of the sensors off 'balance,' and the fix is simply returning it to its intended position.
DeleteSensors or weight. On the motor there is a spot to increase the tension the motor will allow before tripping.

Thanks for all of the tips guys. I checked the sensors and looked at the track and nothing looked blocked or bent. But then I clicked the opener and the light on the ceiling flicked on and off and made a clicking sound but the door didn't budge at all. Does that mean the battery on the opener is dead? Maybe that was the problem? But then why was the door moving before?
ReplyDeleteThere should be a release cord at the top of the door, you can pull this to move the door manually and check the mechanical action up and down of the tracks and rollers.
DeleteIt almost sounds like an electrical problem though, the power cord may not be plugged in completely and looses power as the motor current comes on? I wonder about this b/c you say the light goes out momentarily, or flickers on and off, it could be loss of power or the number of flashes (assuming they're consistant, like three, for instance, may be a trouble diagnostic code. I've not seen an opener that flashes a diagnostic code before but the newer ones might, there are many more new features added each year it seems.
You might get a model number and manufacturer name off of it and see if a google search yields an operation/installation manual????
TOF- Have you thought of asking your wife? She's the one in the other room wearing the pants dude.
DeleteYou kidding Mark, she's already pissed-off enough over this sh*t?
DeleteI'm not sure CP. She's lived with this dude for a while..maybe she's used to it?
DeleteNow I'm thinking the spring that opens/closes the door needs replacing. Find a ladder and check the coiled spring assembly at the upper left side of the garage- you may find a point at which it's snapped in two.
Deletei'll have to check that out CP...you could be right.
Deletemark's asking for $200 for other people's ideas? now we know who was REALLY doing the kitchen reno
Pull the cord, lift the door, grab a beach chair and crack a beer instead of sweating it, the door ain't goin' anywhere and if the wife's too busy feeding the kid right now then why not just take a break till she's ready to come fix the thing?
DeleteThat is, pulling the cord and lifting the door makes it look like you're working on trying to fix the thing.
DeleteYes, it could be the spring is broken and the motor can't lift the weight without the spring to counterbalance the weight. But the original problem was the door wouldn't go down, a broken spring would keep the door from going up.
DeleteSometimes the coiled spring (I guess this is a roll-up door) is centered over the top of the door and can't be inspected unless the door is in the down position.
I'm a professional contractor licensed by the state of California to rip you off. Tough.
DeleteProfessional contractor mentality, LOL! Just like BC. I'm not like that man, someone needs help with their boat I'm gonna explain how to fix it themselves if they've got the tools. Most times they don't though, LOL, but they still want to know how even if they "don't have the time to" do it themselves.

"I would argue that at current prices, stocks have more than priced in a normal recession, so a mild recession could easily come and go with little effect on stock prices.
ReplyDeleteThere are many stocks which are cheaper now than they've been any time since 2000 other than the financial crisis, but no-one seems to want to buy.
That is why I wouldn't place too much emphasis on the macro noise, but look at individual stocks. If I can buy a stock at a half or even a third of it's value, I really don't see how I can go wrong with a little patience. I also think that few traders are spending the time to dig through stocks because all the news is macro, which is giving us these great opportunities - go where the competition is least."
I totally agree with you, BB. How can I go wrong buying PNPFF now, when over the last 5 years it has been lower than the current price for only a couple of months in the Fall of 2008, and its price/NAV has been lower than it is now only during those same couple of months (I suggest you folks read their presentation at http://www.pinetreecapital.com/_resources/presentation/Pinetree_Q1_2012_final.pdf)?
I am not even mentioning AUMN, which will go from cashflow negative to positive in 4Q2012 (because of increased production) and will keep increasing its production for the rest of 2013, thus getting a steadily larger profit margin...

that's quite the move in copper.
ReplyDeleteTOF, still think the furniture store industry is dead? Seems like a good way to play the housing recovery and many (FBN) are way down.
ReplyDeleteBB - I don't think it's dead...i'm actually seeing more and more price raises from China and at some point it's going to make the US mfgs more enticing to consumers from a price perspective. FBN...I was looking at that one 2 weeks ago actually. They have a lot of big brands but I'm assuming it's poorly managed.
DeleteThe other one that could be a big winner I think is Natuzzi (NTZ). It's Italian, so cheaper than the U.S. companies, but is growing it's North America presence so that it now gets over 1/3 of it's revenue from North America and less than half from Europe.
DeleteIf people get fed up with the cheap Chinese and Ikea stuff and move back towards better quality, should do well.
I'm definitely seeing the Amazons and others stepping into the furniture market...a small but growing portion of furniture sales are going online, most likely from people that go to the store and then look online. I think the key to success in the industry is having one of two strategies:
Delete(1) Selling a blend of low and high priced items with some very unique pieces that no one else carries, and having smaller square footage stores with a strong online presence
or
(2) Having a few huge stores with either very unique products or very low prices.
The ones that will not win are the ones that sell higher end stuff that you can find online for cheaper and that have big stores. NTZ might be that type of company...I'm honestly not familiar with their stuff. It looks nice but I don't know what the price points are.
Picked up a little more NSPH and NOK. Now about 25% in each.
ReplyDeleteThe Nokia Pureview cameras that are coming out are really impressive in terms of camera quality. I honestly think they would be much better off just designing the imaging for cell phones and licensing their technology than going up against the iPhone. I understand that there's room for other phones (Samsung is doing fine) but it's a tough commodity business. Right now I'm investing in NOK because the sum of the parts is worth far more than the whole. I also think there's always a chance they can make money in the smarphone market because it is similar to any other consumer discretionary market where trends come and go and come back again.
ReplyDeleteNSPH- I've been looking into this one. It is kinda interesting.
ReplyDeleteIt's risky...they need financing within 12 months most likely, but the FDA approval they received for their blood tests is a game changer and I can't see any hospital not opting for it. To be able to blood test for multiple infections (i.e., multiplexing), turn around a lab test on bloodwork in 2 hours (vs 2-4 days) and target antibiotics specifically for the infection the patient has (as opposed to hitting them up with several antibiotics in the hopes of picking the right one)...this is a game changer.
DeleteI asked the company:
"I have one more follow up question if you don't mind. Are there any blood stream infection assays currently on the market and FDA approved that have a turnaround time like yours does?"
Their response:
"No problem. The simple answer to your question is “no”. We are alone in this opportunity."

ReplyDeleteFIO Mark? Stop out below $17.2.
ReplyDeleteActually INVN is the one Mark. I decided to buy some at $10.63
ReplyDeleteTalked with my brother last night about INVN...he works for a startup that is working on gyroscopes and he said they're always comparing their stuff to INVN. He said they had to change direction a bit and focus on industrial applications because it's tough to compete against INVN and they're finding less competition in the industrial space. Check out the rev growth on INVN:
Delete2009 = $29 Million
TTM = $157 Million
Gross Income
2009 = $13 Million
TTM = $85 Million
Net Income:
2009 = $0
TTM = $47 Million
FCF:
2009 = -$2 Million
TTM = $42 Million
They also have $158 Million in net cash. Could be a good trade here. I'm thinking this is like that NQ trade we missed.
I picked up some more at $10.64.
INVN is in the Nexus 7 apparently:

guess that's why STM is suing them.
Screw it...I decided to move out of the NOK...with the earnings for NOK coming up in a week I'd rather be on the sidelines and wait for confirmation of a bottom...at least a successful retest of the $1.77 level would be good. Sold at $1.85 for a $0.03 loss.
DeleteDefinitely MIA with regard to today's rally.

DeleteGWW sells them, DHR makes them.
CP - The chart on INVN looks awesome right here. I'm only in it with 10% of the port but love the setup. It has based off the $10 area several times. Fundamentals and growth support a move to $20. That's a 90%+ move.
ReplyDeleteYep, the H&S is completed and the chart does look like a comeback could be in the works now that shorts have won the bull/bear battle.
DeleteI don't know when shorts plan on covering, in these situations they seem to be just keeping their positions on, maybe so they can avoid taxes on gains and they just use these unrealized gains as leverage for new positions somehow?
HFTs are having a field day blitzing shorts.
ReplyDeletetough market...seems the only ones making money are the ones selling options.

DeleteHow about selling puts?
yep selling puts and calls

ReplyDeleteDBC - Looks kinda like bull flag breakout, have you guys loaded up on oilers? OIH doesn't seem to have broken out but trying to here.
ReplyDeleteMan, I know this is kinda dumb but I look at some of these charts and have Deja-Vu flashbacks to last last years gold and silver/PM miners charts where they topped and went into a downtrend.
ReplyDeleteCP - The thing I've noticed on these hot tech stock IPOs is they will crush the stock on perceived or actual selling by insiders after the lockup period...and then there is a moment where you can trade them for a huge gain so long as the story is intact. the lockup usually expires 6 months or so after the IPO. in INVN just based on the heavy insider selling it was 4 weeks ago.
ReplyDeleteso a lot of times, and especially in this market, people short the crap out of the stock after momentum stalls after the IPO because its well known that people fear the lockup expiration selling...whether it comes to fruition or not. short interest spikes in almost all of these companies. this has been a great source of profits for shorts over the past year or two as the IPO market opened up. tech stocks seem to have been the highest win % for the shorts, but even in retail i've seen then beat down some companies. SKUL was one of them.
Deletewe really should have been taking advantage of this more ourselves.
Now there's a strategy I can comprehend.

INVN - Okay, I see the tall opening candle from this morning's open that might get tested, that would take price to $10.20 or so.
ReplyDeleteThus, I just placed a bid at $10.20 in case this does occur today or tomorrow.
should have waited on my entry. luckily i didn't buy a ton. i'm getting used to having to be patient on trades. frustrating indeed, especially when you buy near the high of a day with intentions of trading something and having to wait several days for it to return for a minor gain. i'd actually like to have it repeal all of it's gains and set up for another chance around $9.9. pretty much every stock i have traded over the past month has retraced most of its gains. selling rips has worked.

ReplyDeleteTo be honest, days like this (a missed opp) feel worse than days when I take minor losses. It's the nature of the human psyche.
DeleteHeck, days like this initially even feel worse than days when I take major hits. Although ultimately (usually after a night's sleep), I know my emotions will catch up with reality.
Deletetof- You were right, bro. When stocks break support, buy the shit out of it.
Delete2nd - if it makes you feel better i was right but my port lost about 1/2 a percent today. the only two stocks i've sold the past week: big positions in DECK at $45.2 and UPRO at $71.4. f*ckin A bro.
DeleteI like this! So if the $26 support hold for SLV and it rockets higher, then I should be happy. If, on the other hand, SLV breaks through the $26 support, then I should be even happier and buy the shit out of it! :)
DeleteEmotionally, I hope we won't get there -- I *really* don't want SLV breaking its support at $26. Which, I guess, implies that it WILL break that support...
2nd in this market, I think buying the support breaks like you said is a better play then buying breakouts which seem to be death to short term traders in this environment.
DeleteAnd on the plus you have closer stops if/when we are wrong.
t3d - yep absolutely. buying breaks in the market or major etfs is the way to go. the market gets too carried away with trends in this market on individual stocks. breaks on individual stocks can just lead to even more selling/buying. take RIMM/NOK on the selling and anything food related (MNST, REED, SNAK, WFM, TFM, etc.) or recently WMT on the buying.
DeleteThe COT reports released today show that the spread between long and short unreportable positions in silver this week was smaller than during the December 2011 low in PMs. So I suppose a break of the $26 support in silver will not imply a wave of selling (since all momentum players have left this market a long time ago) but instead will imply a buying opportunity...

tof- Yeah, I need to spend some time this weekend getting my head around the reason(s) we (a) fail to act on our instincts, and/or (b) doubt them once we act. It has to be the 'secret' (if one exists) to changing the trading game.
ReplyDeletei know the reason: we're inherently too impatient.
DeleteIn fact, I would argue that we have all arrived at a Crossroads here. No one arrives here by chance. We've worked hard and paid serious dues, which now earns us a 50/50 shot at uncovering one key to trading success.
Deleteright now just buy any freaking break. load up on calls if it's a big cap stock. Look at SINA yesterday. support was $46.86 on 12/16/11 and $47.1 from 1/9/12. yesterday it broke down through both and triggered stops. it bottomed about 10 minutes later and within 4 hours it was 8.5% higher. go on stocktwits and read the posts by people that are pretend technical analysts. they regurgitate the stuff they see on CNBC and stock blogs about technical support/resistance points and breakouts / breakdowns. when something is "breaking out" there will be dozens of posts about it and how it triggered a buy. the same on the sell side. fade every one of those and i bet you will be right 75%+ of the time.
Deleteso when something "breaks out" and you read about it on stocktwits and you're holding it then most likely it's time to get the hell out. if you're ok with holding longer term and can sit through the volatility then go for it and hold. for the majority of us here, it's time to sell. i learned the hard way with FSLR...it "broke out" then retraced a bunch of the gains and i had to sit through and wait for the next pop to sell. i should have remembered this on the DECK position but got impatient and sold for a much smaller gain than i could have had a day before...
DeleteDavid- I recommend downloading 'Stolen.' A well-acted indie flick that's a cross between 'Frequency' and 'The Changeling.' Held my attention throughout.
ReplyDeleteTBF, took a shot at this at the close, bonds should have sold off more then they did with today's action.
ReplyDeleteI'm taking a "2nd" approach here if the mkt rallys Monday and bonds do not sell off, I'm out. One of these markets were wrong today.
I'm trying not to read into one day moves too much anymore. It's a mugs game.
DeleteYeah I agree. On Monday bonds could be up and equities down for the double wamie!
DeleteI know I would be better off holding longer than I have, but the intra day volatilty is tough.
They had me by the shorts yesterday and I decided to hold through, today I was lucky as the mkt seem to gain off of JPM or whatever.
GS and MSFT were my best gainers today but offed GS

ReplyDeleteGarage Door Opener - TOF, I remembered last night another phenomenon about my garage door opener that might be useful for your consideration; that is the motor will overheat and go into thermal overload/shutdown if I open and close the door consecutively more than a few times. Apparently the design of the motor is optimized for a short duty cycle vs it's size, and cannot quickly dissipate the heat generated over more than a few cycles powering the door up and down.
ReplyDeleteSo if you stand there testing the thing without allowing a cooling-off period of about 30min, I think you'll find the motor will stop operating until it cools off.
This is normal
