The first story I clicked on this morning was Clint's speech at the Republican National Convention. I gave the performance 'the benefit of the doubt' at the time, thinking it only sounded surreal because it was 3 am.
It would have been better if he hadn't shown up. The 'Halftime in America' Superbowl ad for Chrysler? That's how he should have played it. He's probably into his fourth 6-pack by now, trying to forget the fiasco.
You know, we've all had moments like that in our lives. I've had some pretty embarrassing experiences, one of which occurred during a presentation in one of my Michigan B-school classes. I volunteered to give the presentation despite assurances from a team member that he would do it. I over-rehearsed to the point where I froze at one point and ----ed up pretty badly. I still cringe at the recollection.
ReplyDeleteBut if you're Clint- already famous, at the top of your game, with nothing to gain from another 'appearance-' why the ---- risk it all, needlessly?
DeleteI did once too but that was over 20 years ago in front of 20 or so students that i didn't know and will never see again. I guess if it happened today you and I would be on youtube but even that is better than prime time tv.
DeleteThere's not a ----ing thing he can do to repair the damage, IMO. It's like Art Schlichter or Pete Rose throwing entire careers away on a bet.
DeleteThe lesson has to be> 'Quit while you're ahead.' If you're doing well, do not give in to hubris and gun for more.
DeleteThat's probably even more true when trading. In fact, I was thinking just this morning while driving in to work> 'I'm up +10.6% for the year. What's wrong with that? Trying to force another 4-5 percentage points could just as easily take me back down to zero.'
I guess I'm the only person who hasn't seen the Clint video.
ReplyDeleteIf you're an Eastwood fan, I suggest you think twice about watching it.
DeleteWas he drunk?
DeleteHere's my take. He had time on his hands while vacationing at Sun Valley. He started toying with the idea of a sketch involving Obama- for kicks. He may even have been under the influence at various points while working out the details. A combination of narcissism + the real possibility that the Republicans would welcome his presence then lifted the 'sketch' into the realm of reality. He didn't 'run' the sketch by anyone, wanting the element of surprise on his side. All rehearsals took place entirely in his mind. He likely began to have misgivings as he began the speech, but applause and laughter from the crowd encouraged him to continue as planned.
DeleteHad he rehearsed the sketch with an audience, family and friends would have talked him out of it.
DeleteThat's why we all need advice/feedback from others- to keep us from acting like idiots.
Deleteit was pretty bad...i had to turn it off after 8 minutes. if he rehearsed it in front of friends/family would they have had the balls to talk him off the ledge? or is he surrounded by "yes (wo)men" because of his reputation?
