03/01/13 Desolation Row/ The Titanic Sails at Dawn

GDXJ off another -1.6% to 15.58. Dylan’s otherwise esoteric lyrics always seem to nail the trading landscape. It’s really not that surprising, as there’s no difference between trading and mob psychology. PT Barnum was better at exploiting it, whereas Dylan was the poet-observer. The key question in trading is not ‘Which side are you on?’ but rather to discern which side is winning and hitch a short ride. Thinking too hard about ‘why’ rarely works, as there is little logic to crowd behavior. It’s usually better to leave ‘explanations’ to the media.

Praise be to Nero's Neptune
The Titanic sails at dawn
Everybody's shouting
"Which side are you on ?"
And Ezra Pound and T. S. Eliot
Fighting in the captain's tower
While calypso singers laugh at them
And fishermen hold flowers
Between the windows of the sea
Where lovely mermaids flow
And nobody has to think too much
About Desolation Row.
Yes, I received your letter yesterday
About the time the door knob broke
When you asked me how I was doing
Was that some kind of joke ?
All these people that you mention
Yes, I know them, they're quite lame
I had to rearrange their faces
And give them all another name
Right now I can't read too good
Don’t send me no more letters no
Not unless you mail them
From Desolation Row.

Not much else to say. I wish I had a job. My portfolio of mostly miners has ruined me

Same here cheapy, I went through a very difficult time in 2008 and am still having trouble seeing the light, had lost my life long career permanently due to illness 3 yrs prior, took on to much risk to make up for my inability to make an income, self employed before so I had/have no pension, and then the crash happened.I wouldnt wish it on anyone. Even though I was right about the pog heading higher I had my head handed to me on a plate. That is difficult to accept.
I am trained in a new non physical career now and making headway, although it is still incredibly difficult with the illness and all,the future looks better. I dont know what I could offer to help, possibly search for a new direction that you can get passionate about,be dilligent, and persistent. It just doesnt seem possible that the miners could be at levels they were 20yrs ago in there bear market, but that is the reality unfortunately. I wish you the best of luck.

    3. I have fond memories of both of them, and if I had posting privileges I would probably say something.

    4. What would you say that you wouldn't say to someone at the Jim Jones compound in Jonestown, Guyana?

      I can post....

    5. I've been sitting for almost twenty minutes trying to think of something to say. I can't come up with a ----ing thing. I'm too depressed about it. Maybe tomorrow.

Be thankful for what you have, because you never know what will happen next.

  2. The carnage in miners (juniors in particular) is just relentless.

    1. I think the market cap of AUMN will soon drop below the total cash they have on hand. :)

    2. It's no joke. SNE's market cap is currently below total cash on hand. And a few weeks ago it was half the amount of cash on hand.

    3. Here's what I think. Miners will continue to sell off, followed by a snap back rally. Then they will sell off further, followed by a snap back rally. And on and on until it stops. The problem is, no one knows where it ends. Sure, it may turn out to be 'today.' But hasn't that been the 'hope' for the last 6 months?

    1. I mentioned buying SNE last night and I was so exhausted this morning that I forgot to look at it until this afternoon. I should have just bought a few shares, anything, just to have a position. It's a great looking chart.

    2. the buying opportunity was 3 days ago when i bought it. the selling opportunity, though, wasn't 2 days ago when i sold it :)

    3. to be honest, though, i'm in investments that i think will do much better over time and my position on SNE was 1/7th what it was the last time i sold at $11.3 before it went straight to $16 in 2 weeks. ultimately, it is heading higher. for me it comes down to which stocks have the higher ceilings...

  5. I bought 5 microcaps the second week of Jan. I was using the Stockcharts strong volume gainer screen and looking for stocks with a price of $1.50-$16.00 range. The five I picked were CAMT, PAM, USAT, EGHT and NOAH. My positions sizes are small in each one of these. Just focusing on percent gain, they have all been up over 13% since I bought them EXCEPT for EGHT, the one I though had the best fundamentals.

The two that look the best right now on the charts are NOAH and USAT.

    1. funny USAT and PAM were on my list as well. In fact i have a buy trigger on PAM at $3.7. USAT scares me a bit for fundamental reasons primarily...

    2. Look at NOAH, tell me what you think.

I was trying to find some free stuff on Stephen Stewart "Pic Of Power" guy.

I think the following article from 2006 is him. He gives some of his scan criteria here. It seems to fit.
