Have the miners bottomed?  Ask me again after they decline another -20% or so.  Seriously.

  2. 2nd, I think it is going to be more a matter of time than price. The huge demand growth from China is slowing and the suppliers are now bringing a bunch of mines onstream to support the 2007 demand. Metal prices can hold steady as the costs to get a mine to production have gone up, but the miners are getting squuezed on margins. You can still pick your spots when they get really oversold or really cheap, but the tailwinds are gone.

Way easier to search through financials, industrials, transports, chemicals, etc. that are in bull trends with better fundamentals.

    1. Did you guys catch that dude on CNBC the other day talking about the juniors? He basically said they all are lying about production costs and over 1/3 will be gone now that the 'easy' money has left them.

    2. A major bottom in the juniors MUST be accompanied by such a sentiment, for otherwise it won't be a major bottom...

  3. Potential Hybrid REIT Catalyst: IVR/RWT/PMT/DX/MITT/EFC

"FHFA tells GSEs to take less of the mortgage pie
    3/8/13
The FHFA released ’13 strategic goals for Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac this week
which could eventually open the mortgage lending markets to more private
capital, creating more investment opportunities for hybrid mortgage REITs. The
FHFA encouraged the GSEs to raise guarantee fees on new loans, making it
more economical for private investors to compete for new loan business. The
GSEs were also instructed to demonstrate the viability of risk transfer transactions
with at least $30B of UPB in 2013. The hybrid mortgage REITs are well positioned
to invest in these risk transfers transactions, in our view, and they could become a
significant investment class for the group going forward. MITT said initial risk
transfers are likely to generate healthy low teens ROEs for investors."

  4. evening,

cp, welcome back, i was getting concerned.

stopped out of my remaining tvix just about at the low for the day. I think its worth trying again on the next green uptick.

stopped out of my VXX today too. all that leaves me with now are 3 mostly worthless april spy puts. no more shorting the general market. I've tried and it hasn't happened.

FXY, I view this as a different story. I put my order out to bu 2 Jan 14 100 strike puts at 3.80 but mine never traded. I didn't get my order out until right before lunch though. I'm going to see how it looks and maybe try again tomorrow.

Sold a little of my USAT to lock in some profit.

  5. mark - saw your comment about the cnbc guy. i have to say i've read about comments like this very close to every major bottom in different markets. in march 09 there was a guy that said they had a strategy meeting and they couldn't come up with one single reason for going long and that the market was due to go down more.

in april 2012 i remember hearing about how guys thought nat gas would go to $0.

so when i hear about comments like this it really makes me interested. i just wish i had some way of determining the value of a metal that comes from the ground, which is the main component in determining the value of miners.

  9. If you are thinking about the junior miners:

    http://www.theglobeandmail.com/globe-investor/inside-the-market/insiders-suggest-now-is-the-time-to-snap-up-junior-miners-on-the-cheap/article9270513/

The junior mining sector is in desperate times, with share prices depressed and many companies struggling for their very own survival.

But here’s one sign that better times could be on the horizon: corporate insiders at many of these firms are snapping up shares, believing that this is a time to bargain hunt, not run scared.

According to INK Research, which monitors transactions among corporate directors and officers within their own businesses, there are more than four stocks with key insider buying for every one with selling on the junior miner-rich TSX Venture exchange.

That could mean purgatory. The bottom line is I prefer to play dead cat bounces, until the sector proves itself.

  17. This is a ver GOOD thing...i guess this is what they were mentioning on those presentations a month or so ago when they were talking about reducing costs in their network.

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. , March 12, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- YRC Freight, a subsidiary of YRC Worldwide Inc. (NASDAQ: YRCW), has mailed to union leadership a proposal for a new set of network improvements.

Once implemented, the network improvements will be another step in YRC Freight's efforts to continuously improve customer service, optimize linehaul density and load average, reduce empty miles and reduce shipment handling.

"By realigning our network, YRC Freight will reduce the number of handling and relay locations in order to build network density," said Jeff Rogers , president of YRC Freight. "These network improvements will be seamless to our customers and when implemented will improve our service. The ongoing effort to optimize our network is also a key part of our sustainability efforts as we reduce mileage and emissions. Better density means fewer empty miles and less emissions."

A committee composed of union and company leadership will convene a formal hearing - expected to take place in April 2013 - to consider the network improvements which are expected to begin in May 2013 .

"This is all about improving customer service and taking another step to regain a lead position in the North American LTL market," added Rogers. "This change also moves us closer to sustained profitability."

so which ones do you guys see as the ultimate winners in this online poker / gambling movement? ZNGA seems to be getting some support but knowing how people gravitate to the biggest possible network then wouldn't FB be the ultimate winner? if that's the case that would be self-reinforcing as it would draw in more users to its network that previously stopped using it (like myself and pretty much all of my friends).

  21. It took SLV one more day than I expected to break above the $28.1 resistance level (formed over the past week, visible on the 1-month intraday chart). I am surprised that it didn't rally right away to $28.50 following this break, since now it is clear that the chart is bullish and SLV will keep climbing. Buying it now is a low risk buy, IMO. I have already purchased my SLV call options last week, so I am all set...

    2. GDXJ has broken out today above its Feb 26 high. PNPFF will surely follow, since 50% of its investments are junior PM miners... The 1-month intraday SLV chart also looks awesome -- to broke out today above the 1-week resistance. Now couple this constructive price action with a 10-year low sentiment in the PM sector (as was well-described here: http://www.zealllc.com/2013/congfut2.htm and also in some Geoff's charts), and you'll see that a continued rally in the PM sector is inevitable...

  28. YRCW - The 80/20 rule appears in play for this one, and a few others such as AGO.

Notice that YRCW reached $5.80 last week then rallied to close $6.20, which brought today's $6.80 So based on this rule, it wouldn't be unwise to anticipate a close better than $7.20 soon.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Inversely, if $7.20 target is rejected, the price could trade between $$7.20~$6.80 or, if tomorrow's opening direction is immediately down, could lead to a retest of $6.20?

      Delete
  29. AUMN - This one too, 52wk low was ~$2.20 which held and today it ran to ~$2.80 but failed to close above.

This one obviously correlates with PM's to a large extent, so one should apply the 80/20 test there as confirmation. For instance, gold has settled above $1580 level and if it can hold then there's a decent chance $1620 is possible. Currently $1592, should progress to $1598, then to $1602, etc...
