4/9/11 Captain Underpants/ Cover Those Shorts

The little guy and his cousin had a gas reading/watching Captain Underpants a couple of years ago. Most homo sapiens, with the exception of Marky Mark, can't handle trading publicly wearing shorts- that's why they came up with the concept of long pants. Neither does the investing public enjoy throwing money into a sinking market.

It's time for bears to cover their shorts with a pair of longs, and let's get on with the economic recovery of 2011. Break out the peanuts and Triple Bock (anyone remember the 17.5% zinger Samuel Adams put out in the nineties), and let the earnings season begin.

  1. OK, I lied. I have no life outside the markets and the chat room.

  3. 2nd - I'm officially kicking you outdoors for the remainder of the day (unless it's raining).

  4. AONE - Has the electric car gone off the cliff, or does this company really have no chance of competing in the market?

  5. 2nd: My comment looks like a comment on your life now. Please feel free to zap my comments when they have lost context :). My comment could apply to Mark's double header soccer match at two disperse locations though.

  7. Have you WATG players ever looked at SORL? Another China auto parts company of similar size, price per share, chart, price value per share metrics and financials except that SORL has much less debt and a much better return on assets. Hence, a better value play as well as tradeable?

  8. Mark - looks like she beat em and is gettin ready to really pound the ball. Got any more? Our spring season just got started with practice sessions. Have all 4 grandkids in this year with the 4 year old boy starting. Luckily they all play in the same park but it will be like watching a 3 ring circus some days.

  9. Your in the wheel house Illini. My parents are coming down next weekend to watch Kendra in a tourny. I'm ashamed to say I didn't get many good pictures today. Most were way out of focus. Not sure why.

This one's ok, but the funny thing is she picked this girl clean on this play and all of the parents were laughing. I hope to redeem myself in her game tomorrow. Wait until you see this field. Right on the SF bay. It's incredible.

  10. Oh my goodness she is half the size. What is the age difference? She needs to learn to flop especially any where near the box.

  11. That friggin headbutt flop is hilarious!! Luckily, non of the girls do that at this age.

Age difference. 2 or more years. 9 to 11.

What's Neil up to? Club stuff this time of year?

  12. Our season is over. Tryouts in may and since it is so frigging hot they play indoor all summer until labor day.

  13. rb- I know what you're referring to. Surely one of the great films of our generation.

CP- You sentenced me to a day of yardwork, man. Wait, my wife did that. You just rubbed a little salt in the wound.

  14. The proper context for rb's comment is a reference I had earlier posted (and then deleted) to Apocalypse Now.

  15. That's big age difference for girls. Growth spurt, but the little one will have the advantage always at the feet pestering the hell out of even the best ball handlers. That won't be the last clean pick she gets.

My youngest one Preston is getting notoriety as a goalie. His mainly all friend silver level team played the regional team from Neil's Club in state cup. Preston's team lost 1 nil on a penalty kick. Preston played real well blocking everything in sight. The mexican kids were calling him El Gato. The Regional coach asked Preston to tryout for his team, but we are going to pass. What fun would it be to keep goal for a good team. Boring.

  16. I was thinking today about the very real possibility that a buy-and-hold approach to large-cap value stocks may allow each of us to make a shitload of money.

It's one thing to hold SLW through the insane volatility of the mining sector. Whereas one might easily double/triple the portfolio holding CSCO/INTC for a few years, and not lose much sleep over it. It would require concentrated bets in a few of the Dow Dogs, but hey- if not now, when?

  17. Yard work: The horror, The horror. A little napalm. A little agent orange. No more yard work.

  18. I recall making the same comment about AMAT in the Fall of '98 to a colleague...and did nothing about it. AMAT promptly gained 8x (that's right, eight fold) over the next two years.

    ReplyDelete
  19. So AMAT was considered a POS in '98. Right now, I cannot post recommendations for CSCO/INTC on CC without being reminded that I'm investing in the POS sector. So I think we have a shot here at picking up these companies at prices that will sound unbelievable in 2013. Just a thought.

  20. Recall we all had the opportunity to pick up stocks like TCK in March of '09. Actually, both Mark and I did. Then we both sold it way, way before it peaked.

That's all water under the bridge. Our job now is to find the next opportunity. It may be right in front of us.

  21. Good call RB. Kendra actually played goal today for the first half. Tell's you about the athletic difference.

Man, WTF does anyone live where you do? You guys don't produce/make anything right? Is it all about shifting $'s from the retiree's to their support staff?

Can you guys play 11 on 11 indoors? No indoor fields here for that.

  22. I guess I mean AZ is basically one gigantic extended living machine, right?

    ReplyDelete
  23. What are you talking about? They produce sand, and plenty of it. Also a major meth manufacturing/distribution hub. Read up before you dis the area.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Retiree's, golf course's and Meth labs. The trifecta of a sound economy.

Seriously though I wonder how this place survives and I have lived here for 30 years. We do have Raytheon's manufacturing plant. So for every tomahawk missile that blows up a mud hut in Libya another family can buy a mud hut here in Tucson. It's just business.

  25. Nice call 2nd, You beat me too it.

  26. What is the POS sector. Is that text language for my boss.

  27. 2nd - I traded AMAT in two rounds during Jan-Feb 2009 at prices $8-$9. Made peanuts. Sure wish I was more of a holder then but it was a scary time.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Heck I owned Amat a few weeks ago. I bought on a break of $16.00. If I only held on?

Quite frankly why is AMAT not higher. AMAT=solar which goes up with energy. Blah blah. People don't believe high OIL is here to stay or Amat would be at $25. Their earnings are great.WTF. Back on the watch list.

  29. Isn't Ft. Huachuca pretty close to Tuscon up in them there hills? Has to be another employment center although I never visited in my career as an Army civilian engineer.

  30. I see your points RB/2nd. My parents spend about 4 months a year distributing their disposable income in AZ. I don't know what the meth to golf ratio is though. From the pictures I'm forced to watch, it appears they park their trailer in some sort of mega parking lot that has small fixed artafical grass strips spaced about 20' apart for miles on end.

This leaves me to believe the meth ratio must be quite high.

  31. Tucson has one of the biggest AirForce bases in the country right in the middle of town. Ft Huachuca is 90 miles away and basically supports sierra vista a town of about 100,000 people. Huachucha is very beautiful chaparral country. Rolling grassland type hills with oak groves. probably little like Mark's neighborhood.

Thats it! Heaven on earth. Don't have to mow Arti grass. Right 2nd.

  33. For cryin' out loud, I'm not recommending this but if you're tired of maintaining the lawn, you could go buy a 50lb bag of rock salt and load it in your spreader!

  34. 2nd u do know that the pick right beneath our eyes is redf right? 10 yrs of losses and marginal revenue growth, with arms length deals with its founder...I mean it's so obvious, captain.

  35. Nice overview of S&P earnings...
