CSCO/INTC> Flash Launch newSubmitted by 2nd_ave (5595 comments) on Fri, 04/29/2011 - 22:02 #84921
Anyone notice the high-volume vertical spikes in both stocks in the final minutes? Explanations? Most likely 'explanation' I can come up with is a Flash Launch. A clear example of maximum frustration, should both stocks gap up big time on Monday.
FD: I'm no longer holding either one. And not too happy about it right now.

2nd_ave-The Nasdaq re balances QQQ on Monday May 2-CSCO, INTC, and MSFT among others will see their weightings doubled while AAPL is being halved. The price action in the aforementioned stocks in the final minutes today probably was due to this one time event.
Man, if these two take off premarket without me, it will be the Market I know only too well. WTF, man. Is there another game on the planet where players mutter those words more often?
ReplyDeleteWell, maybe stovetop pharmaceuticals.
ReplyDelete2nd - I honestly think you have no reason to worry about those taking off my friend. I don't see much longer term value in either of them to be honest. The tech market is rapidly evolving and it is at a point where behemoths can be left behind overnight (or so it seems). I'd rather stick with the banks if I had to go the big cap route. You just know that over time they will be fine.
ReplyDeleteYou're right. We should all move to Bullhead if we're serious about making money.
ReplyDeleteAnother example of Wall Street as Vegas. Give up on the 12 and it comes up 3x in a row. Give up on black and it comes up 10x in a row.
ReplyDeleteThat's why seasoned gamblers and seasoned traders understand each other.
ReplyDelete'WTF.'
ReplyDelete'F!'
'F this.'
'F------ A.'
'WTF!'
Wait- it was the screenwriters for 'The Wire' that came up with those lines.
2nd: I think CSCO and INTC are low risk long term holds, but I think the 99 cent question is will they outperform the QQQQ. I think if I was looking for a long term hold in large cap tech. I think the QQQQ would be my weapon of choice. Now to get drunk. An IPA is a very good weapon, but our local brewer makes a liquid of mass confusion that is very smooth. I wonder if you can get it up there. We simply call it the best liquid on earth.

Nimbus Old Monkeyshine Ale is a true premium ale and is priced accordingly. We're so proud of this beer for its body, taste, alcohol content and drinking enjoyment, it may just become our signature beer. Be warned: its wonderful malty sweetness camouflages the 8.2% alcohol by volume content. It's a winner!
TF - Hope you saw my post to you on MITK minutes before the new post by 2nd. (Error in addy...TP meant to be TF). Addendum to that re liquidity: My last sale was put in as all or none which can slow down the process. It did a bit but I did not want to have a small remnant of the block remaining. A-ok by the end of the day. Another peculiar thing about what I see on BB quotes - I put in a bid less than the ask and the display does not acknowledge it. Also, the bid and ask sizes never change. Always 500 each.
ReplyDelete2nd - I lightened up for the weekend (PBR-Mitk) and maybe for the next month or two but still hold CSCO. At a loss. Waiting for that little bit of good news or an analyst upgrade. Looks like it may take awhile.
I just searched the local BevMo sites- no access to Nimbus. I've heard of beers being unable to make it out of local areas due to speedy consumption by locals.
ReplyDeleteillini- Do NOT confuse TF with TP. It's just not right.
ReplyDeleteRed wine?
ReplyDeleteSure, I'll have a glass. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteI used to be a beer drinker and I do keep some Harp in the fridge but it is too filling in my older age. I came to red wine when my son had a job with the largest and best winery in Missouri, Stone Hill. No cabs there in the colder climate. Try the Norton grape, a survivor.
ReplyDelete2nd's a beer man, no doubt.
ReplyDeleteIllini- No cell phone? We just canceled our land line.
Guys, we can't dismiss the action in TRE over the last few days. It's a SOH favorite and 300K shares traded on a 3 min bar right at the close driving the price up .24. According to the dude at SOH that has a large position in it, there is a single short that is huge. Maybe ABX that has a dig next door. Anyway, for nimble traders it's well worth watching.
Tre What is it? Sounds familiar.
ReplyDeleteIllini- Hailey's first 'game' is tomorrow. Want to see some size differences, tomorrow will be the day!
ReplyDeleteTRE- Sinclair dig in Tasmainia. JB is on the board. He can fill you in better than I. Bottom line though, that's a hell of a lot of over heard resistance cleared in a snap.
ReplyDelete2nd I would send you some, but i believe it is against federal law to send alcohol in the mail. No more federal offenses for me. THe last time, I accidentally brought, Lupita my Nogales hostess across the border. For some reason they made a federal case about it. Bunch of haters!
ReplyDeleteIllini - damn...ur confusing me with TP? Speaking of TP....gonna meet up with some good friends at the bar in a few...depending on how many beers we toss back I might have to have some TP ready for the morning...eww
ReplyDeleteMark > have fun at Hailey's first game. Have a great weekend guys.
ReplyDeleteMark - I can't cancel my land line, have dsl on desktop. I recently bought a Dell 17" laptop and am now wi-fi with that. It is my second computer and screen which is nice because I have two accounts with Scottrade and can view both. I know I am in a small minority without a cellphone but when I had one several years ago I had close to zero calls and it was a pain to keep it charged. My laptop has a video thingy and I am in contact with my grand children and the household thru Skype. Thats nice even though they live only a mile away.
ReplyDeleteMark - We already saw the size difference in a shot of her looking up to a big girl, or was that not a game. Whatever, it was a classic so keep em coming. I have two with 8:30 AM games so I guess this old man better sign off... and hope it doesn't rain.
ReplyDeleteNot one soccer game for me tomorrow. Its been a long time since that has happened. A much needed respite.
ReplyDeleteIllini were do you reside in the Land of Lincoln.
TRE - Projects out to about $9.25, if it captures $7.60 and can hang onto that level.
ReplyDeleteI wish I could understand what TRE has that is of value
ReplyDeleteCB- How's it going? Still just sitting tight with RBY?
ReplyDeleteIllini- Soccer today is for Hailey. She's 6 and this will be her first 'game' with the U9 team. Mostly 8 year old's. Should be funny. She's been a little frustrated practicing, it's tough. But I suspect she'll break out in a game. She's kinda like that, but we'll see!
RB - I am in Peoria, IL. A town that Caterpillar pretty much runs. Got up this morning in time for the 8:30 soccer games but decided not to go because of the wind with a temperature of 59. Very gusty. May go to a late morning game of the 4 year old grandson.
ReplyDeletehey guys - been holding TRE for some time now. the bottom line is that the tracks they own in Tanzania should produce "millions" of oz's of gold. They have other properties, some in China now, which they'll either mine themselves or more likely farm out to a miner.
ReplyDeleteThe real push to the stock comes if/when they make "junior miner" status. That opens the door to institutional investors.
Highly spec though for many reasons: the deposits may be very weak and the government could always nationalize the land.
good luck to the girls at the tourney Mark!
ReplyDeleteWow you are in the middle of America, Illini. I love towns built on water fronts.A very pretty town. Do you have CAT stock. Wish i did.

ReplyDeleteI just read yet another excellent weekly letter by John Mauldin:
ReplyDeletehttp://www.investorsinsight.com/blogs/thoughts_from_the_frontline/archive/2011/04/29/the-endgame-headwinds.aspx
which clarified for me what is driving gold price up and what will be driving it for years to come. It is not just the deficit -- Mauldin mentioned that a country can indefinitely run deficit at a rate that is lower than the rate of the nominal GDP growth. However, when deficit is higher than that, the country debt as a percentage of GDP starts growing, and THAT'S what is driving the currency down and gold up. Mauldin cites research from Bank of International Settlements, which predicts the future path of debt/GDP for various countries, including US. The US chart shows that even if the MOST drastic measures to reduce deficit are undertaken, debt/GDP will still keep growing steadily. So, basically, US has NO WAY OUT, and gold WILL keep growing for years/decades to come.
Eye of the Hurricane?

Parts of this I can understand and agree with, other parts I can't. Basically, I believe the economy will eventually recover, due in large part to the bursting of the U$D bubble and a rebalancing of international trade.
My belief is that it may take quite a while though, it'll be interesting to see if emerging economies can continue expanding at today's rates or if their growth slows, which will be a key dynamic in the rate of recovery for debtor countries.
Availability of natural resources are finite in nature, the fundamental dynamics of supply and demand will always determine price direction in the longer time horizon.
"when deficit is higher than that, the country debt as a percentage of GDP starts growing, and THAT'S what is driving the currency down and gold up."
ReplyDeleteI agree, it's all about debt vs trade imbalance. Our credit card is maxed out, our checking account is overdrawn, and we lost our jobs through active export. Now we devalue our currency in order to stave off a collapse of the house of cards, we'd better get back to the basics of creating employment opportunities or in the longer time horizon it's lights out for the dollar.
The concepts are really pretty simple, so many people are attempting to make it way more complicated than it needs to be, causing massive confusion and wondering about why stocks are climbing. I'm not sure why they insist on doing this, if it's out of ignorance or malfeasance.
