10/26/10 Trade Reversals On The 'Right'

I have to recognize Vad for the valuable insights provided on the last two 'Catches.'

The mind likes visual shortcuts, and being a creature of habit, I stick to the same analogies I use time and again. In this case, the same old tractor-trailer-

Trade Reversals on the Right:

SUI-CIDE <---- (Reversal) ----> PASSING SIDE

btw, does your website include any essays on the psychology underlying 'support' and 'resistance' levels?

glad you didn't sell it all (like me who had 1000 shares of ford and sold it all at 8.00.)

what do you think of jst?

  4. CADC - A little publicity, steady stream of orders, and a good business model do wonders for a little known stock involved with building out the infrastructure system (The world's fastest High Speed Railroad among a host of others) of one of the world's fastest growing emerging economies.

  5. JST - Good find vb, China's going to need lots of power transformers going forward. China, like most Asian countries and unlike the western world also prefers to make their own stuff and employ their own people before buying products from out of country.

  6. PAL - Too bad this premier palladium miner has more gold(ore too poor to mine) than they can swim with...

  7. JST - Current P/E is 12, which might be a little pricey for a Chinese stock, they tend to run a little lower than that...

But man do they have growth potential down the tracks if some big boy multinational can't push them off the train at the next stop.

Vad may disagree, but it appears sellers have finished, and it's beginning to climb back up. Whether it's a 'right-sided' trade or not- I'll let him weigh in.

  9. F - vb, you f'd-up on that one, and so did I for not buying. They make some of the best products out there nowadays, I wouldn't hesitate to buy one if I were looking for a new car.

  13. So now the market is going to rise or tread water while the U$D begins to recover and gold fades into the sunset?

  14. JST - vb, there may be a good justification for the higher than average P/E, that would take some drilling down to check the ore quality...

Post your ideas more often, we seek the diversity.

This one sounds like a good investment just based on the marketing potential of the name - pump and dumpers could have a hay day

  20. Not everyone is skeptical of this rally. Here is an article from CNBC titled "The Best of Times For Stocks May Be Ahead":

    http://finance.yahoo.com/news/The-Best-of-Times-For-Stocks-cnbc-1385555060.html;_ylt=AqcpZbR3GDqIvfBWhbpYLz67YWsA;_ylu=X3oDMTE1amUzN2syBHBvcwM2BHNlYwN0b3BTdG9yaWVzBHNsawNwZXJmZWN0c3Rvcm0-?x=0&sec=topStories&pos=3&asset=&ccode=

"According to the Stock Trader's Almanac, the market's sweet spot during any four-year presidency cycle is historically the fourth quarter of the midterm year and first quarter of the pre-election year.

History also shows the markets have historically performed the best when there's a Democrat in the White House and a GOP-controlled Congress-the likely outcome of this year's midterm election, according to many.

Over the last 70 years, in fact, such combinations on Capitol Hill produced an average annual return of 15 percent or more."

Interestingly, I have a feeling that this article is correct. Stocks may have a short sell-off to shake out the weak hands and will then charge forward until the end of the year. Or they may just charge forward, since sell-offs like this morning get bought right away...

  21. David - I still think we get a small selloff and a lot of volatility in the next 2 weeks but that we ultimately go higher. But I'll let the market tell me.

I did take a little risk off the table...closed out most of my BYD position. Sold my Jan 2011 $8 calls at $1.3 that I bought at $1.08ish average. Still holding some out of the money calls in case it gets bought out.

  23. TBT running. I did very well trading this one last year, but can't really get a feel for if for some reason.

  24. CP- Lunch went well. He's buying WFC/BAC right now. Not hand over fist, but building a LT position. For him LT is 1-3 years.

  25. JB- Find us something. Too much cash right now.

  26. Since I think the market will go higher over the medium term, I figured that I should close my TWM position instead of trying to time the small and brief sell-off that we may get. So I just sold at $15.82 the 1000 shares of TWM I picked up last Friday at $16.05.

Psychologically, since I didn't like keeping that position, I was having vivid images of the market moving higher. Now that I am clearly net long, I wonder if I'll get clear images of the market selling off. :) As 2nd_ave used to say, sometimes a trader needs to take a position in order to fully feel the outcome of that position.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Another reason for closing TWM right now is that I got a feeling that the recent intraday dip is over and all indices may finish green today.

  35. I have the pleasure of reporting a 1.9% day, along with the shame of being WAY too long despite having pulled some off the table yesterday...

Rally skepticism? Sure, and markets don't typically rally in September either, right? Sell in May worked out well (to my amazement) for those who trade according to seasonal cycles though.

I'm not willing to look a gift horse in the mouth, keep it coming boys and girls... and don't forget to wake me when the tide turns.

  36. Hey Mark - someone dumped about 100k shares, used the weakness to add another 5k shares, bought ARUN today as well.

Overall the bespoke market strength indicator as move up another notch, i.e. more bullish so I'm going back up to 65%-67% equities this week.
